Introduction
Every year on 10 October, the world comes together to recognise World Mental Health Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and putting a spotlight on mental health as a fundamental part of overall wellbeing. At Delta Detox, we believe mental health and addiction recovery are deeply entwined. As a provider of alcohol home detox and aftercare services, we see first-hand how struggles with substance use and mental health often co-exist, influence each other, and require holistic, compassionate care.
On this World Mental Health Day, we want to share insights, encourage open conversation, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting both mental and physical health in recovery.
Why Mental Health Matters in Addiction Recovery
Substance use and mental health challenges often share a two-way relationship:
Self-medication and coping: People sometimes use alcohol or substances to numb emotional pain, trauma, anxiety, depression or stress.
Neurochemical stress: Long-term alcohol use alters brain chemistry, which can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood instability, and more.
Isolation and shame: The secrecy, shame, and isolation that often accompany addiction can worsen mental health.
Relapse risk: Poor mental health, untreated anxiety, depression, PTSD, unresolved trauma, can become triggers for relapse if they aren’t addressed.
Barriers to seeking help: Stigma and misunderstanding of both addiction and mental health conditions deter many from reaching out for support.
Therefore, any effective detox or recovery plan must integrate mental health support, not treat it as an optional extra.
At Delta Detox, our approach is built on the “DELTA” framework:
D – Detoxification
E – Evaluation
L – Lifestyle Change
T – Therapy
A – Aftercare
We aim to treat the whole person, not just the physical symptoms of withdrawal.
This Year’s Mental Health Theme & What It Means for Us
The World Federation for Mental Health sets a global theme for each year. In 2025, Mental Health UK’s theme is “Good mental health isn’t a constant.” This theme is powerful and relevant, it acknowledges that mental wellbeing can ebb and flow, and that everyone, no matter their starting point, may need support at different times.
In the context of addiction and recovery, this theme reminds us:
Recovery is not a straight line: relapse, emotional distress, and “bad days” can happen, and they are not failures but signals to seek support.
Ongoing mental health care is vital: even after detox, continuous psychological support, therapy, peer groups and relapse prevention tools are needed.
Normalising vulnerability: no one is “strong” all the time. Recognising mental health fluctuations reduces shame.
5 Ways to Honour World Mental Health Day (and Beyond)
Here are some actions Delta Detox encourages and hopes you might adopt, to foster mental wellbeing:
Start the conversationReach out to someone you trust, share how you feel, or simply listen. Talking matters.(Research supports that open conversations reduce stigma and offer relief.)

How Delta Detox Is Contributing
On this World Mental Health Day, here’s how Delta Detox steps up:
We ensure mental health assessments are embedded in every detox plan (the “E” in DELTA).
All clients are offered or referred to ongoing therapy and counselling, tailored to coexisting mental health conditions.
We maintain a free resources hub with links to services such as SMART Recovery UK and Alcoholics Anonymous.
We commit to raising awareness: our blog, social media, and educational content will spotlight mental health topics during October.
We advocate for better access to services, and partnerships with mental health charities and organisations.
Real Voices, Real Hope
We believe stories have power ,stories of difficulty, resilience and transformation. Over the coming days, we’ll share anonymised (and consented) client and staff reflections on mental health, addiction and recovery. Keep an eye on our social channels and blog.
